Eight entities sanctioned for partnering with cartel to traffic narcotics.
The Department of the Treasury announced eight new sanctions this week against Mexico-based entities affiliated with the La Nueva Familia Michoacana drug cartel. This cartel has grown into one of the most powerful and violent cartels in recent years, and curbing its operations has become a primary focus for both the U.S. and Mexican governments.
The eight entities targeted aid La Nueva Familia Michoacana to further their trafficking of illegal drugs, including fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine. They also aid the cartel in its migrant smuggling operations, charging exorbitant prices to individuals who want to move covertly from Mexico into the United States.
“The opioid crisis, and especially the rise of synthetic opioids like fentanyl, has devastated communities and claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans,” said Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. “President Biden and I are committed to using every tool we have to target illicit fentanyl and its precursor chemicals so we can disrupt these deadly supply chains.”
